Spices in an Indian Home
Thinking back to the years of me growing up, most of the ingredients listed in this recipe were a must have in our home. Till date, the ingredients are commonly found in our households.
Using these ingredients were nothing out of the ordinary in an Indian home but as younger kids, we never knew they had healing properties.
My mom use to make her famous Ginger Milk when we would get the flu. I would ask for it even if I felt great.
- 1 cup Plant based milk or unsweetened nut milk such as Almond
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon ground turmeric
- ¼ teaspoon ground ashwagandha
- 2 pinches of ground cardamom (nutmeg)
- Pinch of grated ginger
- Pinch of ground nutmeg
- pinch of Freshly ground black pepper
- 1 teaspoon virgin coconut oil or ghee (optional)
- Sweetener of choice: Honey, maple syrup, coconut blossom sugar
Bring milk to a simmer in a small saucepan over medium-low heat.
Whisk in cinnamon, turmeric, ashwagandha, cardamom, ginger, if using, and nutmeg; season with pepper.
Whisk thoroughly to incorporate any clumps.
Add coconut oil, bring heat to low, and continue to cook until warmed through, 5–10 minutes.
Remove from heat and let cool slightly. Stir in honey (I suggest that you add honey last and not cook it or you’ll destroy its healing properties).
Pour into a mug, drink warm, and sleep tight.
